Why doesn’t ESPN care about real fishing?
From time to time, I see these “Bass Masters” tournaments on ESPN, where the winner might win a few thousand dollars and a little trophy. Bass? Are you kidding me? Every year, there’s a HUGE fishing tournament up in North Carolina called the “Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament” ( http://www.thebigrock.com ). It’s a week-long tournament and last year the total purse was $1.79 million dollars. Yes, I said million. From what I understand, this is the largest Blue Marlin tournament in the United States (176 boats participated last year), yet you never hear about this tournament on ESPN, even though it’s been around for more than 50 years. I remember a few years ago, the winning fish was 831 pounds. You won’t see that on Bass Masters. What is wrong with these guys at ESPN? I guess they have too much programming already, what with the spelling bees and dog shows. Not enough time for real fishing, I guess.
There’s more action in bass fishing, and on a lake, the competitors are all relatively close together, so it’s easy to cover a lot of them, so they can easily show a bunch of fish being caught. In marlin fishing most of the boats will come home empty on any given day, and the boats are spread out over dozens of miles of ocean, so a camera boat can’t really cover more than one competitor at a time.
A camera on the dock showing boats leaving, then showing them returning and hoisting big dead fish on the scales 12 hours later, doesn’t make for an especially interesting show. A news item, maybe, but not a full length show.
I like offshore fishing, but small game offers more consistent action, and action is what makes a show interesting.
