STUMP HOLE
Cape San Blas Road (State Road 30E) is a state road and therefore the responsibility for maintenance of the road belongs to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The following information was provided by Mr. Howard Lovett, Project Manager, FDOT.
Question 1: What long term options are being considered for the STUMP HOLE?
Answer: There are basically five options under consideration by FDOT:
a. Relocating the road east towards the bay as the erosion progresses.
b. Reinforcement of the existing sea wall with rocks as required.
c. Protection of the road by increasing the depth of the beach through a beach nourishment project.
d. Protection of the Stump Hole by coupling a beach nourishment project with off shore structures.
e. Constructing a bridge which would follow the same general footprint of the existing road.
Question 2: What are the funding options for construction of a bridge?
Answer: Construction of a bridge could not begin until the project goes thru the design and permitting process and is placed in the five year work plan. The project currently is not funded and is not in the DOT?s five year work plan. If the project was to be accelerated, the Florida legislature would have to be partitioned and a special bill passed to fund the construction.
Question 3: What action will be taken by FDOT in the event a major storm event breaches the Stump Hole and washes out the road?
Answer: The FDOT will reconstruct the roadway to its current level of service unless there is a catastrophic breach. In that case emergency funds would be made available from the state for the construction of a bridge.
